We always hoped that community leaders, who had the resources to do so, would take it upon themselves to provide something great and exciting for the people in our community. In 2002, this happened.
The Sordoni Foundation in order to secure the future of the United Way of Wyoming Valley challenged the United Way to raise $1 million toward their Endowment Fund within the 2002 calendar year. Following certain guidelines, for every dollar the United Way raises, the Foundation will match the contributions for the Endowment Fund, which is currently valued at $4 million. |

As a result of the hard work and dedication of several volunteers, the United Way was able to announce that it successfully met the Sordoni Foundation's Challenge in early May 2003. This resulted in, growing the United Way Endowment Fund in just one year by $2 Million.
According to the Match's guidelines, the gift was to be above and beyond the annual gift a contributor donates to the United Way. While being required to pledge a gift to the Endowment Fund within the 2002 year, the guidelines allow the contributor five years to fulfill the obligation. Contributions are in the process of being finanlized and the Foundation and United Way are hopeful for a successful outcome.
The United Way is committed to saving and changing the lives of people in the Wyoming Valley. "The Sordoni Foundation has recognized this commitment and has joined in collaboration with the United Way to help secure its future, as well as the future of individuals and families who need United Way assistance," said David Lee, President of the United Way of Wyoming Valley
"Our region has benefited for many years from the leadership and financial commitments of the entire Sordoni Family. We are so pleased to accept this challenge from the Sordoni Foundation as a great start to our 10 year goal for the Endowment.
As needs in our community evolve and agency services change, United Way has and will continue to demonstrate its ability to focus funding on the most effective services that address the greatest needs. Growth in the Endowment will provide the United Way with additional resources to meet these ever-growing needs, as well as provide a safety net for any future unforeseen challenges that may arise. |
