It was in 1831 when a young Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, came to visit America. During the nine months he spent in the United States, he came to realize the uniqueness of American ideals, beliefs and values. His resulting book, "Democracy in America," sets the stage for discussions about democracy that are still carried on today. Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need; he recognized and applauded this truly American trait. |
