The Key to Building a Better Community is Taking the Time to VOLUNTEER!
Volunteering is a sincere offer of service. It is a commitment to work with dependability and enthusiasm. In order to choose the right volunteer job, you should examine your skills and interests.
When you become a volunteer you will discover a sense of well-being, and self esteem; get to meet new people; learn new skills; find satisfaction because you can do something to make things better in the world and because it's one person making a difference.
Asking yourself the following questions can be helpful:
1.What kind of volunteer work have I done in the past?
2.Would I want to do something different?
3.How many hours a week would I like to volunteer?
4.Would I like to volunteer in my neighborhood or outside my neighborhood?
5.Do I have transportation to get to the volunteer job?
6.What skills, hobbies, or interests would I like to use in my volunteer work?
7.What age group do I want to work with? Children? Teens? Adults? Elderly?
8.Would I like to work with the physically or mentally disabled?
9.Do I want to work independently or with other volunteers or staff?
10.What community causes interest me? Literacy – Health – Arts – Children and Youth – Homelessness – Environment?
Once you have answered these questions you are on your way. The next step is to call your local Volunteer Action Center. This person will be able to refer you to the appropriate organization. |
