Mission Statement

The Volunteer Action Center (VAC), a division of the United Way of Wyoming Valley, serves as a community resource, matching the skills and interests of volunteers with the needs of nonprofit agencies providing services in the Wyoming Valley.

What is Volunteering?

Making a difference in your community by getting involved; growing as an individual by giving of yourself and recognizing that the help you give makes life better for all of us.

Why Should I Volunteer?

Discover a sense of well-being and self-esteem; get to meet new people; learn new skills; find satisfaction because you can do something to make things better in the world and because it's one person making a difference.

How Does the Volunteer Action Center Work?

When a person calls to volunteer, a Volunteer Information Form is mailed to them to be filled out and returned for a match with a local nonprofit organization.  The VAC refers individuals whose profiles most closely match the needs of a registered organization.  A phone call is then made to the prospective volunteer with the agency name, contact person, and brief job description.  For more information see volunteer opportunities listing.

Corporate Volunteer Council

The VAC coordinates the Workplace Council, a group of employees that represent local businesses and who work year round on special projects in order to meet community needs.  Projects include the Christmas in July Food Drive, Day of Caring and Seasons of Service.

Volunteer Partnerships

As a member of the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Centers of Pennsylvania, the Volunteer Action Center is part of a nation-wide network of more than 450 Volunteer Centers that works in partnership to mobilize people and other resources to deliver creative solutions to community problems.

Benefits of Volunteering

There are many nonprofit organizations who rely on volunteers to get the job done. As a free community service to all nonprofit organizations, the Times Leader has generously given the Volunteer Action Center the opportunity to include a weekly listing of  "Volunteer Opportunities" .  Agency requests for volunteers can be made by filling out a Volunteer Press Release Form.
