Alexis de Tocqueville Society General Information The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is a national leadership giving program, created by United Way of America in 1972, to involve and deepen the understanding, commitment and support of high wealth individuals to United Ways and to recognize the deep commitment to outstanding voluntary community service. The Society derives its name from Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat of the 1800s who traveled throughout America and wrote enthusiastically on his observations of the American spirit of voluntary effort for the common good. The Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Wyoming Valley was established in 1993 to foster, promote and recognize the vital importance of local voluntary community service and personal giving at an exceptional level. Membership in the Society includes individuals and private foundations meeting the leadership giving standard of $10,000 or more annually. Under the leadership of Bill and Peg Sordoni, the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Wyoming Valley has experienced tremendous growth. Last year, the United Way welcomed four new members who displayed their increasing commitment to our community by joining the Society. The 36 members of the Society collectively contributed over $519,000, to the Annual Campaign. In recognition of Tocquevilles vision of the American spirit of volunteerism, United Way is proud to salute these leaders for their foresight, dedication, and generosity. Together, they have a tremendous impact on our community by creating opportunities, saving lives, and making our community a better place in which to live. Their membership serves not only to advance the charitable work of the United Way, but also as an exemplary statement of caring and compassion to all citizens of the Wyoming Valley.
