Meeting Emergency Needs
Emergency Services – American Red Cross
Meets the immediate emergency needs of disaster victims and military personnel and their families. Develops, plans, and trains volunteers in preparation for disaster/emergencies.
Blood Services – American Red Cross
Trains volunteers, recruits donors, and staffs blood drives to ensure an ample amount of blood supply in the Wyoming Valley.
Emergency Services – Commission on Economic Opportunity
Provides funding for individuals in need of assistance with housing, utilities, temporary shelter, and crises resolution.
United Way funds are only used if an individual is not eligible for publicly funded services and all other avenues have been exhausted.
Traveler's Aid – Commission on Economic Opportunity
Provides transportation and travel-related expenses. Special emphasis is placed on assisting former welfare recipients in securing and maintaining employment.
Emergency Medical Care – Commission on Economic Opportunity
Provides prescription drugs, which are distributed to free clinics in the area.
Emergency Shelter – Domestic Violence Center
Provides 24 hour access to shelter for battered women and their dependent children, giving access to a safe environment, counseling services, transportation, food and nutrition services, and referrals.
Help Line – Family Service Association
Provides information and referral services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Also provides a telephone reassurance program for homebound and elderly individuals.
Emergency Assistance – Salvation Army
Provides necessities, including food, furniture, and clothing to individuals and families on a limited basis.
Kirby Family House – Salvation Army
Transitional housing, providing up to 10 families with a safe environment in which to build life skills, seek counseling, receive child care and transportation assistance, find employment, and locate permanent housing.
Emergency Shelter – VISION
Provides shelter, meals, medical care, clothing, transportation, employment and permanent housing assistance for homeless men.
Showers for the Homeless – Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA
Provides a safe, warm place for homeless men to shower (in conjunction with VISION's Emergency Shelter program) |
