Independence for the Elderly and Disabled – Individuals with Disabilities

Community Resource Center – The Arc of Luzerne County

  • To enhance the quality of life for those with mental retardation and similar disabilities and their families through a lending library, referrals, information, support groups sessions, educational programs, and access to internet (available to all members of the community).

Individual and Family Support Services – The Arc of Luzerne County

  • Assist individuals and families to negotiate the Mental Retardation system by providing sessions to discuss issues concerning individual rights and assisting parents in the development of ‘Individualized Education Programs.

Walk With Ease – Arthritis Foundation

  • A six-week recreational walking program, in which individuals are educated about arthritis.

Scholarships for Children with Special Needs – Catholic Youth Center

  • Provides scholarships for children with autism to participate in activities including swim classes, gym activities, and arts and crafts.

Project Friendship (at the Greenhouse) – Community Counseling Services

  • A psychosocial vocational rehabilitation facility for individuals with mental health issues.  Friendship Club is the social component of the clubhouse to develop social skills through in-house activities and scheduled out-trips. 

Community Access and Recognition Program – Community Counseling Services

  • Provides developmental training classes for individuals who are severely disabled, by engaging in activities (ex. Meals on Wheels, CEO Food Bank, and Toys for Tots) to enhance their self-esteem, community involvement, and vocational skills.

Life Skills – Creating Unlimited Possibilities (previously United Celebral Palsy)

  • Assists adults with disabilities to gain skills, such as academic, activities of daily living, pre-vocational, and socialization/recreation in order to live independently and/or obtain employment in the community.

Scholarships for Children with Disabilities – Jewish Community Center

  • Provides children with disabilities with a variety of socialization and educational programs through scholarship funding.

Vocational Rehabilitation – United Rehabilitation Services

  • Provides vocational training to individuals with disabilities to enhance job skills and obtain employment in the community.

Scholarships for Children with Special Needs – Wyoming Valley Children's Assoc.

  • Provides scholarships for children (ages birth to 5 years) who demonstrate developmental disabilities to obtain physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as early childhood education.
     

Independence for the Elderly and Disabled – Elderly Individuals & Medical Needs

Guardianship – Family Service Association

    §Protects the interests of the most vulnerable and aged community members through court appointed guardians, who become substitute decision makers (financial, medical) for individuals found incapable of acting on their own behalf. 

Transportation Reimbursement – Hemodialysis Patients Association

  • Provides transportation reimbursement for patients in need of dialysis to prevent financial hardship and promote regular attendance for treatment.

Scholarships for Seniors – Jewish Community Center

  • Provides scholarships for the at-risk senior population to promote independence, health, and socialization through activities including hot meals, daily activities, clubs, speakers, volunteer opportunities, and holiday events.

Elder Law – Legal Services of Luzerne County, Inc.

  • Provides legal aid to elderly individuals through brief and extended legal assistance to advise on housing and debt, prepare legal documents, and provide education.

Elder Exploitation – Legal Services of Luzerne County, Inc.

  • Prevents/responds to financial exploitation of elderly individuals through intervention, education, guardianship services, and creation of task force and community protocol.

Care of Acutely Ill – Visiting Nurse Association

  • Provides home care for acutely ill patients, who are homebound and require skilled services of nurses, therapists, social workers, or home health aides.

Care of Chronically Ill – Visiting Nurse Association

  • Provides home care for chronically ill patients, who are in need of personal care, medication management, and companionship to remain independent.

Dial-A-Driver – Volunteers of America

  • Transportation program for elderly and individuals with disabilities to provide rides to and from medical appointments, therapy, and grocery shopping.
